E.B. White famously said “Analyzing humor is like dissecting a frog. Few people are interested and the frog dies of it.” With all due respect to Mr White, I believe there is much to be learned from analyzing a joke; especially when the joke is nerdy. When I refer to a nerdy joke, I mean a joke that derives its humor from specialized knowledge in a certain field of study. I never intend the word nerdy to be an insult.
There are nerdy chemistry jokes:
“Do you want to hear a joke about sodium?” “Na.”
There are nerdy biology jokes:
Geneticist’s pick-up line: I wish I were DNA Helicase so I could unzip your genes.
There are nerdy math jokes:
There are 10 types of people: those who understand binary and those who don’t.
That last one doubles as a nerdy computer science joke as well. In each case, you need some insider knowledge – a nerd advantage, if you will – to get the joke. If you are one of those people who finds yourself scratching your head in confusion when someone in your nerdy social group cracks a joke, then this blog is for you! I intend to tackle one nerdy joke at a time, drawing from many fields of study. For each joke, I plan to explain why it’s funny to the best of my ability. Even if you still don’t like the joke (Hey, not everybody can tell ’em!), maybe you’ll learn something. I’m sure I will.
If you have an inoffensive nerdy joke, I’d love to hear it!
